Pakistani tribesmen were advancing rapidly towards Srinagar. While Nehru dithered, his team flew to Srinagar in a Dakota DC-3 and flew back to Delhi at 2 AM the same night with the document signed by the Maharaja of Kashmir putting his kingdom on the side of India. Nehru was still indecisive, but Sardar Patel on his own authority told Maneckshaw "You have your orders, take action immediately". Maneckshaw saluted and left. The action by the Indian army against the Pakistani tribesmen who had come almost up to Srinagar was stopped in 1948. Pakistan still occupies the land it grabbed at that time as POK.

The Indian government for some reason does not want to acknowledge Field Maneckshaw greatness. A Bharat Ratna would be of little use to the great soldier now. Instead the GOI could establish a military academy in his name that has the latest cutting edge technology for training soldiers of the future. That would make him proud.A. B. Thanks God, there are still some people around like Major Rajput and yourself who are such good patriots. The great man's 97th birthday passed by so quietly instead of nation's any TV channel or newspaper mentioning him even briefly. More shameful, how most shabily he was treated by the ruling UPA govt even after his death. There has never been a Sam Maneckshaw though Gen. Harbaksh Singh was a great soldier and general and without congress politics of Sikh prejudices he could have been a General but no one can take Sam Bahadur's place.

Your compilation of Sam Bahadur is a classic example of your sincerity towards him. I will save this article for good.

With most sincere best wishes,

Amit

Amit Bhadhuri)
amitarjun@blueyonder.co.ukINDIA OFMY DREAMShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08354654681348443147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937088411451927836.post-2312872026077798212011-04-04T01:32:42.199+05:302011-04-04T01:32:42.199+05:30The one and only Greatest figure the INDIAN ARMY e...The one and only Greatest figure the INDIAN ARMY ever had.KT Ravindran,Retired JWOhttp://indiamydreamland.blogspot.com/2011/04/remembering-great-and-charismatic.htmlnoreply@blogger.com
