IESM Not at Cross Roads

My earlier letter
.
Dear Friends
.
I is indeed painful to go through the correspondence going on before the AGM convened for 27 November 2010. The concept of healthy discussions is always welcome, but going into unsavoury debates on issues is undesirable and these if had been sorted out peacefully and without much ado, would have been even better.
.
Unity and thorough understanding amongst all constituents of the IESM shouldbe our primary objective. Settlement of certain of our important issues should be our top priority and there should be no question of undue rigidity whatsoever from any quarter. In an organisation which certainly is not dictatorial, majority views must be respected and should prevail, irrespective of by whom the issue has been raised.
.
I am a strong advocate of unity amongst all ESM organisations for forming a formidable front, and have communicated my views in no uncertain terms, at every possible opportunity, but egoism seems to be playing a big part against this. I conveyed my views to the IESM Governing Body, AVM Mishra of IESL, as well as, Col Inderjit Singh, one of the most veteran soldiers dealing with OROP. However, nothing fruitful seems to have emerged so far. I hope good sense would prevail after all.
.
So, my fervent appeal is that, let us at least, sort out all the existing differences and problems amongst the IESM, peacefully and amicably, at the existing forums, and not work on personal egos to disintegrate or disunite the organisation, which has been formed and built up to its present status, with a lot of efforts and difficulty for a very noble cause.
.
I also suggest that an annual, half yearly or quarterly programme of action must be formulated at the AGM, with responsibilities given to various committees, so that they can act accordingly. This would add to the confidence of all the members of IESM.
.
With all my best wishes for a peaceful and result oriented AGM.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Further to my mail sent on the subject a few days back (appended below), I am afraid that the situation somehow has not yet quietened down on this front as expected. It is heartening to note though, that more and more people are coming forward and making sincere suggestions and efforts to ensure unity amongst the constituents of IESM. Full credit to Brig Chander Kamboj, Hon Lt Kameshwar Pandey, Lt Col Brij Thapa, Lt Col GV Shridhar, Lt Gen ( Retd ) D P Singh, Gp Capt H Rajgopal, Col N Vishwanathan to name a few for trying to defuse the situation, which is indeed a good sign. However, some letters, especially the one by Brig Harwant Singh to Col Rajan was not in good taste.

In this connection, I would like to submit that the posture, poise, a balanced and dignified approach adopted by our Chairman Lt Gen (Emeritus) Raj Kadyan, is commendable and in accordaance with the expectations of majority of the IESM, and is certainly worth appreciating. His stand, in not confronting Col Rajan, on hisun soldier like and causticapproach, in anyway deserves to be specially mentioned. I would like to congratulate, the Chairman Lt Gen (Emeritus) Raj Kadyan on my behalf as also, on behalf of all the ESM who think in the way I do.

However, I would also like to submit to the Chairman, as also the Governing Council, to thoroughly and seriously consider the points suggested by Col Rajan, since I feel that there is good substance in what he says. The Gen Body can extract the best out of these suggestions, and jointly formalise a constitution, which would be in the overall good for unity, strengthening and national level functioning of the organisation. I would also suggest that, The Organisation must also define fully the various types of functions, it proposes to perform for the benefit of the ESM, and lay down annual/half yearly/quarterly targets for the various cells to function.

As for my dear friend, Col SS Rajan, I, as anyone else amongst the IESM, would know that his dynamism and ability to organise big events as well as his exuberance in getting things moving are his great assets. I had personally congratulated him for the successful organisation of Badakhana in Bangalore. I only hope, that has not gone into his head. I would first of all like to differ with Col SS Rajan on the issue of not abiding with the rank structure for ESM, such as a General and Sepoy are both alike ie they are Ex-Servicemen. Unfortunately, we cannot overlook totally, even as ESM, the concept of Ranks which is relevant always and every time . On that analogy in service also, all are basically soldiers whether a Sepoy or a General. Can they all be treated on equal terms. On that account would Col Rajan like to profess that all Ex-Servicemen should also draw same amount of pension. Then our basic concept of OROP would get defeated.

I would further like to submit that, in spite of the differences of opinions and some unintended actions by the Chairman in the past, which perhaps did not please Col Rajan, there were no reasons for him to lose his cool and adopt a confrontationist posture, against the Chairman, who certainly enjoys a special and unique status in the organisation. His premature apprehensions, leading to the threat to form BESM, is unwarranted and certainly not in good taste. By doing so he would seriously damage the expectations of the large number of ESM to become a strong, formidable and national level body.

I certainly would never support and approve of a mudslinging match by a highly respected, dignified and reputed senior Army officer to get involved in un soldierly practice, by resorting to unwarranted war of emails, targeting a highly senior and respectable Ex-Serviceman and his team, terming them as a coterie, irrespective of whatever may have happened between them. I can only say that by doing so Col Rajan has gained nothing, but has lost tremendously, which include, his respected stature, his reputation of being a dignified officer/soldier and a gentleman and goodwill of a large number of ex servicemen, earned through his dynamism and enthusiasm. He would realise this one day and regret his unwarranted conduct.

I would even now advise and request my dear friend, Rajan to forget and forgive, whatever has happened in the past month or so, and be magnanimous enough to seek an apology for his un soldier like conduct, not only from the Chairman Lt Gen (Emeritus) Raj Kadyan, but also from all his ESM colleagues, for having given then a lot of pain and unhappiness during this period.

Let us all participate in the AGM on 27 November 2010, with an unbiased and open mind and conduct the AGM proceedings successfully as planned and to work on the basis of majority opinion. This would certainly go a long way in unifying and strengthening the organisational structure of IESM at National level.

Let us all also pledge that we shall not get involved in any unwarranted activity from now onwards and uphold the dignity and integrity of the organisation ie IESM under all circumstances.

With Regards,

Col LK Anand Retd

My Dear Friends,
.
I am absolutely shocked, that this mail sent by me on 8 Nov 2010 is being delivered, even to me on 19 Nov 2010. I am unable to guess the reason, unless some moderator has played up, all these days. Could some one let me know, if there was something undesirable in my mail, sent both to MilitaryVeterans and Indiaveterans, amongst others.
.
I also thank Gp Capt VK Gandhi, for the assurance, regarding proper conduct of the AGM on 27 Nov 2010. I am sure every thing would go well.
.
God Bless All.
